Traveling with babies

Mar 08

Many parents do not want to go anywhere with their babies except home. This is understandable considering that babies require a lot of attention and care. Therefore, when traveling for long distances, one might feel exhausted taking care of the baby. However, it is worth noting that it is possible to go for a holiday with a baby and enjoy every moment of it. Traveling with babies requires a lot of preparation to ensure that things will go smoothly. One of the common questions that many parents ask themselves is when is the right age for a baby to travel? One can travel with a baby as soon as the baby has been born. If the journey involves flying by airplane, most airlines recommend that the baby should, at least, be two days old. It is also worth noting that the baby will require a passport and in most cases travel insurance.

Babies enjoy traveling especially when they are cuddled, and they are feeling secure, and they are constantly being fed. The activity and movement will most likely make the baby fall asleep. If the baby has colic, tongue-tied or if the parent is feeling like the burden of parenthood is too much, then embarking on long journeys is not advisable.

Choosing the right travel gear is an excellent way to ensure that the trip will be smooth. Having a baby carrier or a baby sling is desirable. The baby can be carried close to one parent. This makes the baby feel safe. Baby slings are also good especially when one is traveling using a bus or a train. The baby sling ensures that the hands of the parent carrying the baby are free which makes it easier for the parent to find things like money for fare or passport. It also enables the parent to be able to carry other things like bags while still holding the baby snugly.

One of the most important things that a parent should remember to pack are the usual baby supplies. These supplies include:

  • Nappies
  • Wipes
  • Sunscreen and sunhat
  • Nappy rash cream
  • Tissues
  • Car seat
  • First-aid kit
  • Clothes
  • Formula milk
  • Bottles

When traveling with babies, there are some arrangements that the parent should make before traveling. Some of these arrangements include:

  • Ask for a baby cot when making reservation in hotel. A tired baby does not make a nice holiday companion
  • Ensure that you have packed the baby's cover and sheets. The familiar smell of the laundry will help the baby settle down easily
  • The parents should make sure that they have carried along some of the baby's favorite toys
  • One should also carry a camera to capture all the fun
