Weaning can often be a source of problems and confusion for parents as knowing the right foods to give at the right time can be difficult to determine. There is often a lot of conflicting advice and it can be hard to know which way to turn. One of the biggest concerns that parents face is causing health problems for their baby by offering foods which turn out to give them a bad reaction and one of the questions that is often posed by parents introducing solids for the first time is - do bananas cause constipation in babies?
Bananas are often one of the earliest solid foods introduced to infants because they are soft and easy to mash. They have a sweet flavor which makes them appealing to children and they are also a healthy choice of food being full of vitamins. Yet some parents believe that eating bananas gives their baby constipation so we look at the truth behind this rumor.
Many parents have experienced problems with a constipated baby if they give bananas to them on a frequent basis. Giving a mashed banana once a week is unlikely to cause any major concerns, however if you are planning on giving your little one bananas every day for a week, you are likely to have an irritable infant by the weekend. There are ways to counteract the problem however. Firstly, your baby is more likely to experience constipation from eating a green or just ripe banana than an over ripe one, so if you are choosing a fruit for your infant, look for one that has lots of black spots on its yellow skin. Although they are not as attractive and can look very mushy and unpleasant when peeled, they will give your baby less of a hard time.
Bananas are very good for your little one, so you should try to include them in his diet, however there are ways to counteract their ill effects. One way to do this is to give bananas mixed with oatmeal which will help to reduce the side effects of the banana. Alternatively, mash some pureed apple into the banana too as apples can cause diarrhea and therefore they will cancel each other out. Pears or avocados are two other fruits that can safely be mashed into banana to counteract any constipation that may be caused. Or you could try giving your baby a meal of mashed bananas together with some baby rice mixed with prune juice instead of formula or breast milk. This will help your baby to stay regular and counteract the bowel problems caused by bananas on their own.
