Baby Sleep Training

Feb 27

Getting a baby to sleep through the night can be a difficult task. Sleep training a baby is one of the hardest things that parents of a newborn are going to have to do. There are some tips to help sleep train a baby to get them to sleep through the night.

Log Sleep Times

A parent should log how many times as well as the time on the clock that the baby gets up during the night. This will help the parents find any patterns in sleep and behavior. A parent should also take note of the times that the baby starts to get fussy so they can figure out the proper bedtime. Keeping a log will help identify these patterns and allow the parents to make any needed adjustments in sleep time.

Set a Routine

All it takes is 15 minutes to set up a bedtime routine. A soothing ritual will help prepare the baby for sleep. Take the baby to their room and read or quietly sing to them. This will help prepare the baby for bed.

Set up the Proper Environment

There are things in the baby’s room that will help them have a positive effect on getting them to go to sleep. The room should be at a comfortable temperature. The ideal temperature for sleep for a baby is between 65 and 70 degrees. The room should be dark. Room darkening shades can be installed. All bright lights should be shut off. If a parent wants some light in the room they can purchase a low wattage light bulb.

Lay the Baby Down Awake

As part of the bedtime routine the baby should be put down in the crib while they are still awake. When a parent lays the baby down they should be tired. There may be some crying at first but after three days the baby will become used to this. If the baby is crying hysterically hold the baby until they calm down. Once the baby is calm lay them back in the crib. Stay in the room until the baby is sleeping.

Be Consistent

This may be one of the hardest things for a parent to do. When the baby cries most parents will go right to them. If the baby is not ill check on them and then walk away. Stick to the same bedtime every night. Do not make exceptions about this. Even deviating from the schedule once can mess up all of the hard work that has been put into sleep training the baby.

These are just some tips to help sleep train a baby. Sleep is important for a healthy mind and to allow the body to have enough rest to function properly. Sleep training the baby will allow the parent to get sleep as well. When both the parent and the baby are getting enough sleep both will be happier. The parent will not ready to handle the challenges of parenthood and the baby will be less fussy.
